Beware of Tainted Chicken Jerky Treats

chicken jerkeyToo, too regularly we read of FDA reports that dried chicken treats produced in China are causing sickness and even death in pups who eat them.  Today, msnbc reported:

"The federal Food and Drug Administration has logged at least 353 reports this year of illnesses tied to imported chicken jerky products, also sold as chicken tenders, chicken strips or chicken treats," an FDA spokeswoman said.

FDA Animal Veterinary Bulletin of Nov 18th 2011 reports that previous warnings had been issued in September 2007 and December 2008.

FDA teting laboratories are working to identify the actual chemicals that might be causing the illness and death of animals eating the chicken jerkey.  They report cases of kidney failure and of hypoglycemia being tied to eating the tainted meat.

Symptoms can develop within hours or even a few days.  These include:

  • decreased appetite,
  • decreased activity,
  • vomiting,
  • diarrhea,
  • bloody diarrhea,
  • increased water consumption and
  • increased urination.

Of course, seek veterinary attention immediately.

A quick market survey by Brooklyn Bark shows that the dried chicken treats carried by Wal-Mart, BJ's and by PetSmart are, indeed, made in China.

However, the good news is that TRADER JOE's carries Chicken Jerky Sticks made in the US.  Use those.

Zuke's LogoOr, you can do what we do at Brooklyn Bark where our Care Associates use Zukes treats which are made in Durango, Colorado.  Zukes are carried by most high end pet supply stores.

Fresh Pet logoOr, if you have access to FreshPet treats know they are made in Quakerstown Pennsylvania entirely from American ingredients and pups love them!

So, don't think because it tastes good it is good.  For your pup's sake read the ingredients and country of origin and know this is one time it realy important to Buy American!
