Teflon is a modern luxury, it makes cooking and cleaning up a breeze. As humans, we enjoy this convenience, but the chemicals involved with these common kitchen tools can actually be deadly for our feathered friends. Birds are particularly susceptible to the toxic effects of these chemicals, and exposure to them can be fatal. In this blog post, we will explore the dangers of Teflon and non-stick chemicals to birds and give you a list of common household items that include these chemicals so that you can stay clear of them!

TEFLON AND NON-STICK: THE DEADLY DANGERS

Teflon (originally made by DuPont) and other non-stick chemicals are used in a wide range of household products, including non-stick cookware, ironing board covers, and certain types of clothing. When these products are heated or burned, they release toxic fumes...which is a bit counterproductive to them making our daily lives easier.

Although these fumes aren't great for humans, in birds, they're especially harmful. Exposure to these chemicals can cause a range of symptoms, including respiratory distress, vomiting, and even sudden death. Birds have a highly efficient respiratory system that makes them particularly susceptible to airborne toxins, and even a small amount of exposure to Teflon or other non-stick chemicals can have deadly consequences.

While birds are the most susceptible, other pets and humans can also be affected.

In humans, exposure to these chemicals has been linked to a range of health problems, including respiratory issues, cancer, and reproductive problems. Non-stick is downright scary!
