Dog Treat Recall: This Time it is Hartz Mountain

Hartz Mountain Corporation is voluntarily recalling their dog treats, Hartz Chicken Chews and Harz Oinkies Pig Skin Twists (which are wrapped in chicken) due to contaminated chicken from China.

(where have we heard this before?)

There are trace amounts of an antibiotic that the FDA has banned but is generally used in Chinese poultry.

Hartz is based in Secaucus, New Jersey and their products are found in many Brooklyn pet food stores.

What to Do?

If you have these products contact Hartz Consumer Affairs at 800-275-1414 for a refund.

If you are getting really sick and tired of pet food companies continuing to source their ingredients in China, particularly chicken which has caused so many pet deaths already, contact the FDA directly.

If you care about your dog - and we know you do! - please read any food or treat label carefully. If there isany chicken from China, yea, any ingredient from China, DO NO BUY OR USE that product. Read carefully and closely, for although manufacturers must identify the source of their ingredients by law, they often do so hidden in small type.

Or, play it safe and only buy treats made in the USA only from American ingredients. Four companies "All American" that come to mind are

  • Zukes

  • Kong

  • Charlee Bear

  • Fresh Pet

Sure, treats with ingredients from China are cheaper, but at what cost?
