Halloween is a Brooklyn dog’s quintessential holiday. Even better than Christmas or Thanksgiving where he shares the spotlight with humans, on Halloween pup is center stage. Sure if there are some people puppies they all share center stage, but we salute Halloween as a Brooklyn Dog’s holiday.
So, how can you make it even more special? You already have pup’s costume. You have practiced his wearing it, accompanied with lots of praise and treats and he’s ready to go. Howl-a-Ween, PUPkin and even Tompkins Square Park, here we come.
Well, there is one trick in your repertoire for Trick or Treat Day: Homemade Dog Cookies. And they are so, so easy.
These are easier than you think. Even pup parents who worship Seamless can make these in less than 5 minutes. All the ingredients are available to be delivered from the dehydrated dog food to the canned pumpkin. And this recipe makes enough that you can wrap up little Halloween packets to share with pup’s friends when you see their people in the dog park.
Pup’s Ghoulish Delights
1 cup organic, dehydrated, human grade dog food such as Force (Honest Kitchen) or Artisan (Grandma Lucy’s)
1 cup ground chicken or turkey
1 cup canned, unsweetened pumpkin
2 eggs
½ cup instant oats
Preheat oven to 350o.
Mix dry ingredients together in a bowl. Add ground poultry, pumpkin and eggs. Continue mixing until everything is blended together.
Shape into balls the size of a nickel or a quarter. Place on baking sheet and flatten slightly with your hands.
Bake apx 10-15 minutes.
Cool.
Feed.
In theory these will keep very well in an airtight container in the fridge for a few weeks. My pup has never let me find out.
